Every time the neighbor kids access your network, your signal drops a little. It's pretty remarkable your signal travels that far given the distance and the material it's going through.

You would be much better off with the new router that you can encrypt. If your signal is not as strong with the new router, the range extender pushes that signal further, and maintains the encryption. My wireless card is 802.11 n. This is on a brand new machine and it interfaces with my router that is a couple years old very well.

"N" can be nearly six times faster, but that assumes you have an "N" adaptor. They are downward compatible with B & G usually, but make sure.
