A 3:1 ratio has always handled everything for me..especially if stain is sprayed and it is rubbed in well before throwing into washer. At least that has been my experience even on greasy jeans and work shirts. I believe that is how "Spray-N-Wash" works as well.
Understandably this method may not always work for the heavy things like oil based paint, although I had great success with it this past week while painting using both oil-based and latex. Places like Lowe's would probably be best served with the bigger bottle with intense advertising so people know what it can do.
Maybe initially a premixed spray bottle with a 4oz bottle attached as a promo..then let the consumer decide how often they need the full strength and if it is often enough or want to go through the step of diluting it themselves to buy the 32oz bottle. I would guess there is a way to price it that they would realize it would be more economical to buy the bigger bottle and worth the extra step once they get hooked on it. This may mean we would have to ask retailers for more space on shelves..so this is where all of those carts they have in storage could come in handy.
The reason things like the HE laundry soap sells well is that you see how little you need and because many new washer manufacturers tell you to use that kind or recommend it heavily. Consumers aren't really given a choice because they are being told it is the right thing to use and when you invest that much money in a washer..you do what you're told. AGAIN...it's about advertising and major brands/manufacturers telling consumers it is the thing to do..so they follow.
selling undiluted Winning Colours is contrary to all eco friendly precepts of the company. Doubling the number of bottles of plastic is considered a harsh environmental impact.
The whole eco-movement is about less plastic, greater concentrations, less shipping weight, less gasoline, less environmental impact.
Just trying to see this from the eco-nut perspective here.
