We live in a world where might makes right. Might, and appropriate respect for Might, renders conflict short-lived, so that people can move on to more productive pursuits such as bettering themselves instead of wasting time and energy trying to make others' miserable.
Of course there is the concern that he who lives by the sword have a high likelihood of dying by the sword. However that is not a reason to lay down your own sword in a sword-brandishing world; if you do that, your dying by the sword will just come that much sooner.
