Yes, that much I understand of the technology -- using filters is a tradeoff in energy efficiency.
At this point in time, the problem appears to be mainly that no one company has the best of all three colors, so the manufacturer of an OLED screen has, of necessity, to license from different sources to get the best of each, but I understand some of the patents Kodak has on their original OLED research will be expiring in a year or two.
Near as I can tell, blue (a pure blue) that is long-lived is the main problem (pure red and green already have the required lifetime). There are also a variety of methods for applying the OLED to the substrate, from ink-jetting to vapor deposition. And to complicate matters further, there are flourescent and phosphorescent OLEDs. I'm getting on shakey ground here, as I know just enough to be dangerous, and understand little of what I do know.
As to a source, nothing special, just the Yahoo! boards where you have to wade through a lot of trash and flaming to get to the beef. I used to own stock in Universal Display, and their board used to be pretty informative, but with the stock price dropping for most of '04, it has gotten pretty quiet over there. You could try googling it. Good luck!
