I don't fully understand what happened.

It appears there was a bad cement-job around the wellhead and casing allowing methane to vent up. They were unable to control the kick or shut off the flow and the gas rose to the rig through the riser pipe. Once vented the gas is heavier than air and started settling lower until it found the engine room or a spark. Boom.
