Have you ever bothered to read how most "break throughs" occur? I remember reading way back when I was in high school how a graduate college student was doing an experiment and needed to glue a saucer and tea cup together. Didn't have any glue handy so she mixed some up real quick. The glue didn't have anything to do with the experiment so she didn't write down how she made it. After she finished her experiment she needed to return the saucer and tea cup, they were some what valuable. She couldn't get them apart. Ended up breaking them, and still the glued parts wouldn't come apart. Further testing showed the glued bond was stronger than the original material. Say that could be a valuable glue. Guess what? She couldn't remember how she made it. Spent the next 3-4 months reinventing it. That's the story on how super glue was "invented".

Or how about this recent news story about a new kind of foam that acts as a heat syphon. http://more.abcnews.go.com/sections/scitech/cuttingedge/cuttingedge020322.html I like the part where it says, the discovery of the new foam came quite by accident. Sounds like they knew what they were doing. <g> More along the lines of, what the hell is this. This isn't what we wanted.

And I also liked the part in the artile about the NSA computer chips needing cooling. What are they using for computers and what are those computers doing?

Now this is not to say that there aren't scientists that can do stuff. But I think you will find on close examination they are just following down the closely marked path of somebody else that stumbled through the dark first. <g>
