Um, it doesn't sound like you know much about science or scientists.

That's quite a statement. Oh, brilliant one, please enlighten me so that I may have a clue and do fast science. Ever solve an X-ray structure? How about discovering a new way of making an extremely rare but life-saving natural product? Um, ever try designing a superconducting layered oxide? Perhaps you've discovered how to dissolve sugar in water?
Would you even KNOW a breakthrough if you tripped over something and it appeared in front of your face? A couple of people I respect most are great scientists only because they never miss something that most others, even great idea guys, would miss. Everyone is different, and among scientists, our individuality expresses itself in what makes our work great.
I guess you're one of those types who thinks innovation can be planned out on a gaant chart like a computer program. News flash: programming is not like work in the physical sciences. You don't tell nature what you want and get it delivered the next day.
