Drag the start bar open to about 6 stories high. In the section that has your shortcuts to IE and media player, etc. place a shortcut to the various programs on the startup bar. You can do them all if you want to, or just the ones you use the most. The programs are available by a single left click from the start bar section that has your shortcuts. Works fine in Windows Me, should do the same in Windows XP.

This also allows you to remove all the icons on your Desktop, right click Desktop, select the tab "show all icons on your Desktop" and unclick it. This is for the display of Wallpaper, which Eye change each day.
