Fred,

Harrisonburg is a fair amount west (obviously not as far as California) and a little north of Richmond, as I am sure you already know.

I have been there many times.

Have been on 42 a number of times also.

If I81 was not there then, wasn't 11S to 60W not a better route?

I guess I64 was not there then either?

I worked in Charleston WV for a while and took just about every route from Richmond to Charleston that was on the map trying to find the fastest way. Man what a bunch of cowpaths I travelled. There simply is no fast way.

As far as I81, I avoid it at all costs. I literally hate that road. Bumper to bumper 18 wheelers in all lanes. It should be four lanes in both directions and it is mostly only two.

Have fun,
Phil

Koikaze,

Small world! I grew up in Staunton and lived in Harrisonburg for many years. Did you pick up the hens at Wampler? Marvel? Shen-Mar?

I concur with Phil's comments on I-81. Whenever I am back there, I use US 11 and US 42. The commercial traffic on the interstate is beyond belief! They are still bickering about what to do with that road. One school wants to run a light rail down the median instead of adding lanes. Lunacy!!

BUT back when you were running 42 (as is still the case today), that road is a death trap. Don't know if you remember the big blind curve near Mt. Solon? There have been a lot of fatalities in that area. Must have been a real "thrill" taking a big rig down that road.

BTW, I was born in Clifton Forge, near Covington.
