Yes, there is a good deal of precedence for the seizure of foreign assets, but none that I can think of for a friendly nation, supposedly an ally - and therein lies the rub. It becomes more of a political question for us, rather than a matter of law. Ultimately, such a suit would end up in the US Supreme Court, which in the past has showed that it understands political decisions that have to be made for the good of the country.
