I think it was precipitated by a combination of factors, one of which was a culture of entitlement that was allowed to persist for way too long. The Democrats AND Republicans simply changed their campaign flatforms to suit the needs of this growing populace....and thanks to voter apathy, allowed for the repeal of important laws such as Glass-Steagall (partial repeal), etc.....
Ultimately we have no one to blame but ourselves.
