Limtex, I am not going to argue with you about the morality of shorting, it is clear that you do not understand the mechanism of the markets. Shorts already have a number of limitations (like shorting only on upticks, not bein able to hold a short for a year for long term capital gains, etc.). They are not the one that damage the markets, the one that damaged the markets are wide eyed investors paying 100 time BV for companies with little or no prospect of ever having a profitable business. And as you like to say, without "improving business prospects", the market will go nowhere, where should it go for companies without any prospects?

Suggest you look at short interest in certain big cap stocks versus shares outstanding, then try and figure out how and why the stocks are so down when so few shares are shorts. I think the answer will slap you in the face.
