So when the stock is running up you know people who say its gonna fly but when its at the bottom you know people who say it's a scam.

I just looked up what experience level you need to be a Market Maker in New York, reviewed a bunch of peoples resumes, and looked at salaries there. Do not take this the wrong way, but many of them make $50-80k/year and that is hardly good money or the top of the food chain on Wall Street. You friends may be correct, it's 50/50, but I doubt it is because of their connections.
