In the context of my rant, both pessimists and optimists stand together as the opposites of the realists. Realists are the only ones plugged into reality. The other two are not.
I was targeting optimism and optimists, because I truly believe that they (as individuals and as a group) are responsible for creating most of the human created problems now and historically, either directly or indirectly, precisely because they are not plugged into reality. It is left to the realists to clean up the messes that the optimists make of things. Meanwhile the optimists are cheerily going off creating new problems. It might help if you think of optimists and pessimists as little children and realists as adults.
I hope this helps clarify my point and doesn't just cause further confusion. Geez, I thought I was being so clear and simple. Apparently not. :-)
