Below the surface I bet they are. They had to start playing nice in order to draw ultra conservative Catholics to their causes, form a larger voting block. Deceit is at the base of their actions, lies are their holy right, it's in everything they do. Same as the "Jewish" routine. They use Catholics to their advantage as they can, but they are all damned when the fundies are through using them:-) Useful for now, when not needed down the road, the fundies will turn on them -- again.
And too, they realize they can't get away with overtly vocally treating blacks, Jews, Catholics the way they used to. The country hasn't turned "right" enough to allow it, beyond their local zones. Instead of overtly screaming antiBlack, they've developed the "let's get a token black 'conservative' here/there to rail about how affirmative action has been bad for blacks, let's have George Bush appoint judges who have stated they want to repeal the Civil Rights acts of the 60s, their think tanks are mounting court challenges to black enrollment programs in college. They attack Catholics that aren't far enough to the right to suit them, and Jews who don't fall in step with their views.
Homosexuals, feminists, secular humanists, liberals have been substituted as the scapegoats to vocally, overtly demonize.
And clearly a sizable percentage of the country is stupid enough to fall for it, along with those too lazy/apathetic to be involved in bringing a halt to the game....
