With his poor eyesight and coke bottle glasses, Ryne Duren gained notoriety early in his Yankee career by throwing 100 mph warmup pitches clear past home plate, all the way to the backstop.
"We did that on purpose to scare the hitters," recalled catcher Yogi Berra. "Sometimes from the mound he would yell to me, 'Is the batter hitting right-handed or left-handed?'"
