Hi Conrad RE: Bicycle powered health club
You do realize the idea was in jest. It just seemed wierd to me that you had all those people doing all that work without making use of it on machines that had motors that actually USED energy. Before the advent of motors of any type treadmills were used on farms. Yes they would be on an angle and a horse, dog,or goat would be used to power it for a shelling machine, churning butter, etc. They would power the equipment with a belt and could change the gearing depending on what they were doing. I am sure a bicycle would be more efficient. You can buy a small generator with a pedal system ($250). I think it is a permanant magnet brushless 24v dc motor(used as a generator) It is designed for 12v output and the average person can produce 100w (until tiring >>grin<< ). The guy who powered the pedal powered planes was picked for his high power output to weight ratio. I do not think he weighed much more than 100 pounds (certainly less than 120 ) I can look it up if you want I have a book about it. I think he could put out under 1/3hp or less than 250w.
Speaking of airplanes: I realized many years ago that they seem to keep making airplanes larger. Why not just get it over with and make one 3000 miles long. The people in NY could board in the front and the people in California could board in the back. When everyone is boarded you just turn the plane around and then let everyone off. Think of the energy that could be saved!!!!
Having lived in New York City I can say with authority that Cockroches eat everything but are particularly fond of sweets and fat. Sort of describes us too I just realized >>grin<<
