Shares of some top silver companies were up at the close of trading:
Hecla Mining rose $.23 or 7.8 percent, to $3.18.
Pan American Silver rose $.88 or 4.6 percent, to $20.12.
Silver Standard rose $.87 or 4.5 percent, to $20.02.
Silver Wheaton rose $.60 or 7.1 percent, to $9.08.
