I really don't think you understand the severity of swine flu.
There are 12,000 deaths yearly from all brain cancers. In a NORMAL non-pandemic-flu year, there are 35000 or more deaths from influenza. And that's from normal garden-variety flu.
I also don't think people understand how concerned the US government is about the threat of bioweapons. The problem is very bad right now. It's going to get much worse-- opensource biotech, otherwise known as biohacking, is going to make nasty novel viruses available to people with shoestring budgets and clandestine kitchen labs.
A broad-spectrum antiviral agent with a mechanism of action that viruses can't evolve away from, that affects enveloped viruses without the necessity of even knowing what they are, has national security implications. It could even be said that continued development of such an agent is paramount for national security given increasing proliferation of biological weapons.
And that's in addition to all the natural viral diseases. I'd very much like to see a statistic of how many deaths there are annually from viruses, and how much money is spent yearly on medical care, and how much is lost from the world economy due to secondary effects of diseases like AIDS.
I think big news is coming and I don't think it's going to be much longer.
