Orioles could make a move this year if they can find some starting pitchers to go at least 6 or 7 consistent innings. The guy who hit tonight's game winning home run (Nolan Reimold) is a rookie who could easily be a star. Adam Jones is having his breakout year and has become a star now. Those two plus Nick Markakis could become the best outfield in the majors in the next year or two--all can hit, and all can field and throw (Markakis and Jones are tied for the league lead in assists right now with four; they have cannons for arms). They are bringing up the Minor League Player of the Year from last year, catcher Matt Weiters, who could also be a star. Both Weiters and Reimold can hit for average and power. Mix those four with Roberts, Huff and Scott, and it is a very potent lineup.
But then there is their starting pitching. Woeful as it stands. They have guys in the minors who may be good, maybe even very good. But they are inexperienced. One of them got the win last night, pitched decently for 5 innings (Jason Berken). Another will probably be brought up to pitch tomorrow (David Hernandez, who just struck out 14 in last start on Friday in AAA). But they just put their most consistent starter on the DL with a groin injury, and the no. 1 is Jeremy Guthrie, who is a legitimate big league pitcher but not really a number 1 on a pennant contending team unless he gets a lot more consistent than he has been.
Still, there is excitement in Baltimore with all the young talent they're bringing up to the team!
