Vikings sign free agent WR Derrick Alexander

June 7, 2002

EDEN PRAIRIE, MINNESOTA (TICKER) -- Seeking a replacement for the retired Cris Carter, the Minnesota Vikings on Friday signed free agent receiver Derrick Alexander.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Alexander, 30, was waived by the Kansas City Chiefs on June 1 for salary cap purposes.

Alexander was bothered by hamstring problems last season and caught just 27 passes for 470 yards and three touchdowns for the Chiefs

An eight-year veteran, Alexander had career-highs with 78 receptions for 1,391 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2000.

In Minnesota, Alexander will have the benefit of lining up with three-time Pro Bowl receiver Randy Moss, who had 82 receptions for 1,233 yards and 10 touchdowns last season.

Alexander will practice with the team during this weekend's June minicamp.

Carter, the NFL's second all-time leader in receptions, was an unrestricted free agent and officially announced his retirement two weeks ago.

The Vikings also signed receivers Sean Dawkins and D'Wayne Bates as free agents.
