Niners release Pro Bowl G Brown; sign RB Lewis

June 7, 2002

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -- Offensive guard Ray Brown, who made his first Pro Bowl last season at 39, was released by the San Francisco 49ers on Friday.

The move has been expected since April 12, when the 49ers signed two-time Pro Bowl guard Ron Stone to a four-year, $9 million contract.

Brown has played 16 NFL seasons, the past six with San Francisco. His agent, Steve Baker, said Brown doesn't plan to retire.

San Francisco also signed running back Jonas Lewis to a one-year contract. Lewis has been a key special-teams performer for the 49ers for two seasons.

The 49ers have made a preliminary contract offer to tackle Blake Brockermeyer, who was cut by the Bears in April. San Francisco also is pursuing receiver Willie Jackson and defensive lineman Jim Flanigan.
