Just a good solvent, as soon as the mercury evaporates and contaminates the environment, pure gold emerges victorious. Aqua regia reduces it to chlorides and maybe some nitrates as well), just a nasty powder, no lust, no gloss, no nothing...unless of course, you take the stuff and heat it to about 1069 C, then you get "liquid brilliant gold" again.

Find lots of mercury in the rivers when placer mining for gold. They used/use it to accumulate the fine gold.
