The New Windows 7 Taskbar

Running IE 8 using the Windows 7 OS is quite a different experience utilizing the taskbar and browser combination. Pin the IE 8 browser to the taskbar and open a half dozen tabs (or more) with the browser. Next, mouse over the IE icon on the taskbar to see thumbnails of all of the tabs. Move across the presented tabs to see a larger presentation of the tab or left click on the thumbnail to jump to that tab.

The New Windows 7 Taskbar

The taskbar is one of those things that just makes Windows what it is. It has gone through plenty of iterative changes over the years, and Windows 7 incorporates some of the largest changes yet. The name of the game is now efficiency, transparency, and ease of use.

Gone is a separate and wasteful "quick launch" toolbar on the left, with the main taskbar now serving to both launch applications and help you manage the applications already running. The tool tray on the right has been enhanced for increased customizability, too.

If you're a casual Windows user toying around with the Windows 7 beta, you may "get" the new taskbar's basic features pretty quickly. Power users will probably need a little more time to adjust their habits, but can find a whole lot to love once they learn the ins and outs of this rather dramatic (for Windows) UI change.

We'll walk you through the basics of Windows 7's taskbar use and give you a few pointers along the way that should help make Win7 the easiest and fastest OS to use yet. Continued...
