When was the last time you had the antifreeze changed? If it has been 2 plus years then have it done. You live in an area that if the antifreeze is bad you'll blow out the freeze plugs in the block.
Antifreeze flush: Definitely. Coolant runs through the intake manifold to heat it. At a minimum it will have to be drained. Good time to clean it out and perhaps change the thermostat while you’re at it. Dunno how difficult the thermostat change on your engine is. You live in a climate that can be kinda cold and kinda hot. Best to have cabin heat in winter and no overheating issues in summer.
This introduces a whole new topic: Dex-Cool coolant. Some swear by it, Others AT it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antifreeze If your coolant is red in color (or more likely brown) it likely is Dex-Cool. Might be time for a change. My wife’s ’95 4.3 litre V-6 GMC van usually gets serviced at a GMC dealership. Some time ago, they recommended to her a coolant flush/change. She phoned me at work, I said go for it. The coolant is now green in color. Dunno if it is the “new” "Dex-Cool” or the older non “Dex-Cool” stuff.
Oil Change: Oil should not be involved unless they are also going to replace the head gasket. (Unlikely.). Do or did you have white stuff on your oil dipstick or an oil slick on the top of your coolant overflow tank? If not, the oil change and head gasket change is unlikely.
The guys that typically do the work on my cars offered to do the job for $550...a little more than the lowest quote, but I'd rather have someone do it that has been working on the car for 3-4 years. I'll have to check to see if they include the oil change and the flush. Yup. Go with the guys that know you and your car. History.
Last spring, my ’90 Civic coughed out its third head gasket. My mechanic did me a big favor. He went through the car and gave me a high ($3,000.00) estimate for everything he could find. …*Subject To* the head being reusable. I declined. He then told me that if I had approved the estimate, he was going to phone me to talk me out of it! <g> If your mechanics are like Rick, stay with them! Rick did not charge anything for the estimate. I told Rick that the alternator, starter and distributor were only a year or two old. “Take anything you want.” Dunno if he recycled any parts before the charity operated tow truck showed up to haul it away. I hope he did.
