The big question now is, what is the "E" of P/E?

This is why I personally prefer to use P/D

Earnings forecasts tend to be external. Dividends are more internal, set to what the company forecasts will be sustainable/growable :)

Value Line claims that their 1700 company universe represents approximately 90% of the capitalization of stocks traded in the U.S. While not as broad as the 2500 you mention, it's a reasonable sampling. Currently there's about 7500 issues being traded on the NYSE, NASDAQ Comp. and the AMEX. Apparently 1700 of them represent a significant portion of total market cap. It's hard to believe the remainder only account for about 10% of total.
