It allows peg-IFN and ribavirin to reach a steady-state concentration before the protease inhibitor (Telaprevir or Boceprevir) is added to the cocktail. This increases the effectiveness of peg-IFN and ribavirin in suppressing mutations that have resistance to the protease inhibitor.
