I use Daily charts at night to set my strategy for a stock, timeframe for the trade, and possible entry, exit and s/l points. I move to the shorter timeframes during market hours to monitor and place trades.
I prefer to ease into a position and ease out, sometimes daytrading part of the position and holding the rest for a longer-term trade, depends on the action. Some trades are strictly daytrades, some strictly swing or position, some a mixture. Some stocks I don't like to be without any position (especially on the "little guys" who can go parabolic at any time), so I'll hold at least a small position at all times (though generally that position is a "free" position due to previously taken profits from daytrading it).
Everyone uses different methods. This works well for me. Hope this answers your questions.
