Sanofi does sound Italian, but the company was very French. The full name was Sanofi-Synthélabo due to a prior merger. (Synthélabo had been the pharma division of L’Oreal.)

Yes, and no! When Monsanto acquired Pharmacia & Upjohn, the latter company had dual headquarters in the US and Sweden (where the Pharmacia part of the company came from). After the Monsanto takeover, the merged company was moved from St. Louis to NJ and was renamed simply “Pharmacia.” It was this company that PFE eventually acquired in the deal that proved disastrous.
