RAID 1 mirrors the entire system, not just user files. I'll be happy to email you the configuration I use, which was basically an off the shelf refurbsihed dell system that came configured as RAID 0 (which provides speed enhancements but no backup function) and I reconfigured it to be a RAID 1 array using two 120 gig HD's.
A properly configured array will immediately switch to the redundant hard drive in the event of a failure.
I've never heard of a system going on a "reboot counter", once the HD fails I figure it would just, well, fail. Back up your data as soon as you can and don't rely on the pc running for too long without rebooting. Burn to cd's or anything asap, even before you continue posting, lol.
