Phil - not knowing your geographical location, I'd be guessing to say it's a cardinal. Ours, regular visitors to the feeder, start what I call "bird hiccups" around dusk, and if my house wasn't so soundproof I think I'd be hearing them well into the night.
It's just a guess, you might try your local library and a book on native species...unless, of course, you know an orinthologist. LOL
