In May 1948, with the establishment of the state of Israel, Tel Aviv was made the country's provisional capital and was subsequently bombed several times by the Egyptian military. In 1949 the administrative capital was transferred to Jerusalem, although the Ministry of Defense remained in Tel Aviv for security reasons

Tel Aviv was a "provisional" Capital for a short time, and as soon as the Burma road opened. A road bypassing the Kastel road to Jerusalem and the Bab El Wad portion of the road, both region being under intense Legion and Kaukgi armies attacks, I know because I was in one of the few first "transports" that negotiated the "Burma" trail early in 1949, and I remember vividly having to get off the buses and walk out way up, as the buses were negotiating the sharp turns in that serpentine road. Quite a memorable experience too. Once Jerusalem was no longer "under Siege", most government bodies, except the Defense ministry which stayed in the Kiriah in Tel Aviv, moved to Jerusalem. Russia recognized Jerusalem as the Capital that same year, many other countries followed. I think we still do not recognize Jerusalem as the Capital and our embassy is in Tel Aviv.
