j3pflynn, good point! It is by no means a certainty that AMD or anyone else will have to deal with the issues of 3GHz+ operation. There are other options, multiple cores, for one.
We have been going down the simplistic clock speed road for a long time. Now that we seem to be reaching limits in speed and smallness perhaps we'll see some more creative solutions for improving the computing experience. Another one would be OS excelerators - optimizing low level logic common to all operating systems directly on the processor. One part is already done - GPUs!
