sgolds: I am not a techie. I was reassured by comments yesterday that at AMD each generation of technology gets quicker and easier because of accumulated experience (although nothing is easy in this business). In the 4Q CC Hector said that AMD's transition to 90 nm and 65nm is helped enormously by its liason with IBM.

"With AMD Opteron, we experienced a 66% improvement in our time to mature yield ramp over the prior generation of technology. And all the indications are that our performance on 90 nanometers will be on the same or better ramp."

sgolds, smooth20 - It is by no means a certainty that AMD or anyone else will have to deal with the issues of 3GHz+ operation. There are other options, multiple cores, for one. Entirely new approaches and architectures. Yes, until those are discovered/invented, we'll likely keep plodding down the path of greater clock speed. But things can change in the blink of an eye in the tech world. And we often don't see the change coming.
