I don't find it that weird, it was the man's insult of choice for many many years and it worked relatively well. It's ineffectiveness is almost immaterial now, because as we grew up we were exposed to the idea that the perfect woman is slender and good looking. Along with that we were taught never to insult a woman by telling her she was overweight. So hey, guess what guy's are gonna instinctively do when enraged by a woman?
