Reagan Says He Still Backs U.S. Ambassador to Vatican UPI President Reagan said today that he still had confidence in William Wilson, the United States Ambassador to the Vatican and a longtime friend, despite criticisms of Mr. Wilson's intervention in an international criminal case.
Officials confirmed Monday that a high-level Justice Department lawyer had admonished Mr. Wilson for trying to involve the Attorney General in a case concerning Archbishop Paul Marcinkus, head of the Vatican bank, the Institute for Religious Works.
Mr. Wilson wrote a letter to Attorney General William French Smith in 1982 asking Mr. Smith to determine whether the Archbishop was under investigation by United States authorities and to vouch for the Archbishop's character.
