Yes, Reagan was a man of conviction. He was a Union member when he was younger and that naturally led him to the democratic party, but as the years passed, his conservative views which were once mainstream among democrats, became far out of step with those of his fellow democrats as the party itself took a sharp turn to far left liberal beliefs. As he put it, "I did not leave the democratic party, the democratic party left me."
And by the way, only your hatred for anything republican could lead you to say that "he hurt his country". He made a few decisions that in retrospect did not turn out the way he expected, but overall he was one of the greatest presidents and leaders we have had.
