#52357 RE: jk21 #52356

jk, the proteus is a brand new product. i'm sure its lifespan and durability is just as major a consideration as its accuracy, sensitivity and tolerances. note from electrowave's site that they pride themselves on the longevity of the systems they build for rigs, drillers, etc. so we might guess what that lifespan is, but know that there is no single magic number, especially given it will always be impacted by the hours of use for each individual winch, on many different vessels, all doing their own unique tasks, under a wide variety of loads, in a wide range of environments all over the globe.

note what electrowave states on this page about down time:

http://www.electrowaveusa.com/Projects/DrillerDisplay.html

ElectroWave USA's drillers display system has an unrivaled service record. Over 30 of these systems are installed on our customers rigs world wide, having over 800 rig-months of operating time, over 1 million hours of cummulative up-time, with a total down time of 2.5 hours.

jk - agreed, that quote refers to winches already being used by a customer for which active-heave-comp (AHC) can be added. That broadens the market for DDI since, in addition to the full fledged Proteus (which would come with a winch), they can provide an add-on AHC capability to existing winches. I have no idea what the life span is, of these things. There have been AHC winches out there in the market for a while. However, the Proteus does seem to set the bar higher in terms of capability/precision etc.
