Got me! I guarantee that is not recommended operating procedure from Cat, LOL! Most likely they had dead or weak batteries and it would be hard to re-start. Those big 24V batteries for that thing are not cheap, and they don't sell'em at Sears or Wal-Mart. Or maybe the contractor was billing his customers by the hour based on machine hourmeter reading, LOL!

I laid pipelines all over the county. You should see a 583 Pipelayer based on a D8 or even bigger D9 Cat. It is a sideboom tractor with counterweights that fold out and can carry a tremendous load off to it's side. PUNKIN611
