It will take years to get the price of these modules down to a reasonable level.

One can always count on someone to advance this argument, despite all history to the contrary.

Congratulations!

wbmw,

You don't need 8GB to get the benefit of 64bit addressing. All you need is 4GB to get the benefit. The 2 GB limit on apps will be removed by the 64bit OS, and the 32 bit apps will get close to double of the available memory (OS will still claim some of it, but not full 2 GB).

4 GB is not that far out of reach. You can get it from Crucial for a little over $1,000, in form of 4 x 1 GB DIMMs.

I don't think $1,000 is that much for people who have apps that need this much performance. Socket 939 PCs will have the necessary 4 DIMM slots.

Re: how many people do you think can afford 8GB of memory in a home PC?

Not many. But 32-bit CPUs can't address more than 3gig of memory (1 gig of the address space is reserved by the bios for hardware).

So 64-bits becomes a big deal at 4gig. How much does 4gig cost? 1GB PC2700 Dimms are $97 so 4GB, more than Pentium 4 can handle, costs $388.
