You don't need 8GB to get the benefit of 64bit addressing. All you need is 4GB to get the benefit. The 2 GB limit on apps will be removed by the 64bit OS, and the 32 bit apps will get close to double of the available memory (OS will still claim some of it, but not full 2 GB).

4 GB is not that far out of reach. You can get it from Crucial for a little over $1,000, in form of 4 x 1 GB DIMMs.

I don't think $1,000 is that much for people who have apps that need this much performance. Socket 939 PCs will have the necessary 4 DIMM slots.
