I haven't got an official word on it yet, but I believe the shares can be sold back into the market, however, Des has stated for years that he would never do that, and hasn't as of yet.
It's my understanding they are retired for good. In other words....removed from existance. The remaining OS should be worth more...by the percentage of the shares that were retired...in this case...about 50%. IMO..the only reason that news did not send the sp flying is due to investors waiting for confirmation. Correct me if I'm wrong anyone... SS
Per Barron's "Retirement 1. cancellation of stock or bonds that have been reacquired or redeemed." And Answers.com "A treasury stock or reacquired stock is stock which is bought back by the issuing company, reducing the amount of outstanding stock on the open market ("open market" including insiders' holdings)." But these can be reissued if they are just in the treasury, but retired means cancellation.
