London, January 9, 2003. -- 3G Patents today announced the start of commercial 3G Patent Platform services for evaluating, certifying, and licensing, patents that are technologically essential for the manufacture and operation of third generation (3G) mobile communication systems. 3G Patents is now accepting applications to undertake essentiality evaluations of patents that may be technologically essential.

The issue is that there is only one Body that is recognized as establishing the STANDARDS and their DEFINITION..The ITU IMT 2000 framework...

can you show me a link to any of the 3G standards from the ITU site?

Is there a higher Authority for defining the ESSENTIALITY of patents as they apply to 3G? TIA

Suggest you read from the ITU site....can you find where they define essentiality?

What ever happened to ETSI? There's now over 6000 patents that have been "declared" to them for UMTS/3GPP/WCDMA....you'll note that they are not responsible for defining which really ARE essential.


Why do all the sites take you back to 3G3P to help define essentiality? The issue of patent essentiality will NOT be found in ITU, ETSI, 3GPP, 3GPP2. It is a legal issue and not a standards issue.
