Why would we want to ban people from posting?

Respectfully, I don't think most will think that is really a "feature." I'll save the rest of my initial thoughts, for what they may not be worth, until I see how it goes. I don't want to jump the gun on something that may implode on its own.

On another note, I just got the following error message twice while trying to edit a post.

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error '80040e14'

Line 1: Incorrect syntax near '='.

/boards/post_reply.asp, line 9

Seems like arbitrary deletions is already a problem and this will just make it easier for trigger happy moderators to just nuke people they don't like.

Bad idea IMO.

The ban feature on any board is something only Matt should be able to implement! And only with good reason!!

Look at that. A few days away to gather his wits, and he comes back a GENIUS.

I haven't gone far enough through this thread to read all the naysayer's comments, but ignore 'em. You've pulled a masterstroke.

Naturally, the board chairmen are going to use discretion and warn folks who are out of line (hey, why not be optimistic about it), and this banning feature is going to work like a charm.

Gee, you might even get enough time to work on iHub's problems instead of being mangled by hassles.

Fred

EDIT: Oooooo, Boy! I'm gonna be up in the air for a LOOOOONG time. Everyone's on the other end of this teeter-totter. flg

Bob, Matt.. wow, time does fly

It'd be unfair to do a FTF on this one, so I'll just tell you what it is.

On a temporary/test basis, I've implemented a "Ban" feature for Premium boards. That is, boards on which only Premium members can post, which encompasses everything but stock-specific and Free-Zone boards.

If you're the chairman or a director of one of these boards, you have a link in your Manage screen that lets you ban someone from further posting in that board. Additionally, the Manage screen has a link that'll let you view banned posters and unban them.

Any user who is browsing a board that has any banned users will see a "Bans(xx)" (where xx is the number of bans) link that they can click to see a list of everyone who is banned from that board and who did the banning.

A poster can't be banned pre-emptively from a board. You can only ban someone who has already posted.

If you have a Free Zone board and would like to be able to use the Ban feature on it, ask Matt to move it to a Premium category, but keep in mind that such a move would prevent free members from posting to your board.
