John, As I pondered this situation yesterday it made me thing of the collapse of the oil and gas drilling industry in the US over ten years ago. Many small companies went out of business and exploration dropped sharply as indicated by the rig count. Now the market has used up the "gas bubble" and much of the surplus oil production capacity and the prices are firming. This may be what has to happen here. The pain in South Africa could be really bad. We will see if Mandela has friends in high places now that he needs them. All the governments who brought him to freedom and power should have some interest in his success. Maybe a few central banks should step up and buy. However, what I believe we will get is the old phrase of "tough love".
