S.African union weighs action at Amplats
JOHANNESBURG, June 24 (Reuter) - South Africa's National Union of Mineworkers said on Tuesday it was considering unspecified action following the murder of two union members at Anglo American Platinum Corp Ltd's Rustenburg mine.

NUM President James Motlatsi said the union was currently considering its options and would announce its plans at a memorial service for the two men planned for Wednesday.

``We are trying to work out a programme which will be finalised between now and tomorrow and will be announced at the memorial service for the two comrades,'' he told a news briefing.

Union branch secretary at Rustenburg Platinum Holdings Ltd (RPHG.J) Rudwell Daile was killed last Wednesday by unknown assailants and another NUM official, Eric Rixi, was shot dead at the weekend.

``We are now more than worried about the situation at Amplats where NUM members are assassinated and tortured in hostels where mine management should take full responsibility for their security,'' said Motlatsi.

The Rustenburg platinum mine, the world's largest, has been plagued by a long-running dispute over union representation. It was hit late last month by a two-day wildcat strike affecting 15 percent of production.

Rusplats produced 690,000 ounces of platinum in the six months to December 1996.
