First off China's satelitte is in a different orbit that Sat radios. Sat radios satelittes all orbit geo-stationary right above about where the rocky moutains are.
ie. they rotate around the earth in the same direction the earth rotates at the same speed the earth rotates thus effectively doesn't move much when compared to their position on the ground.
You can't get Sat radio at all in the Asia countries because they are "over the horizon". Sat radio satelites work on LOS only which is why radios won't work in underpasses, tunnels, or garages.
I see Sat radio getting a monopoly of the Trucker market and a big chunk of the high price vehicle markets. They should have a good chunk of the middle class market too once they add their video service.
People who use IPods probably don't work for a living. ie. they have a lot of time on their hands that they fill with modifieing and perfecting their collections so they can brag about who they have to other Ipod owners. Most mom and pops don't have time to bother. They turn the key on their car and it goes until it doesn't and they hire a mechanic. Thus, a Sat radio would be their style because it's plug and play.
HD radio will take those who refuse to pay subscription for radios. Those who normally simply use FM who have a few bucks extra but either can't afford or don't like the idea of paying every month will upgrade to HD.
Sat video is no think for parents. Let the kids fight over the channels and mom and pop don't have to worry about stock piling dvd's. Since it can only show kid level shows no supervision is required and walla they have a baby sitter to shut their kids up and keep them occupied. Not necessarily good for the kids but great for those who own Sirius stock.
I believe that they are downplaying the good news and upplaying potential budgetary problems as a means to get approval for the merger. If the merger doesn't go through, Sirius has no cash flow problem. They will be cash flow positive before they run out of money. In fact everything is running ahead of schedule for building towards a profit making company. I hope they will renegotiate the deal with XM after they get approval because at 4.6 to 1 I think Sirius is getting a bad deal. Right now stock is trading closer to 3.8 to 1 and I think Sirius has a better game plan then XM has.
Personally I would prefer it if Apple or Microsoft merged or bought out Sirius instead of Sirius merging with XM. Microsoft has been looking for places to invest their money. They have billions saved with no place to put it. They at one time were planning on firing up satelites of their own and creating their own internet. I'm glad they didn't. It would never had successfully competed against the current free internet and been a waste of money. They have MSNBC why not MS. SIRIUS.
