#3957 RE: Spallenzani #3951

RE: Spall-Meme/Mikkj/Gun Control.

Cars entail a significant cost. Insurance, title fees, gas, the price of the car itself, etc.

The same holds true with guns. Misguided leftists like yourself try to ban cheap guns (what are commonly referred to as "Saturday Night Specials") and impose mandatory licensing and training programs, believing that this will promote safety. Yet you and others like yourself fail to realize that you are harming the people most in need of protection: the poor minorities living in crime-ridden inner-cities.

The more expensive you make gun purchases, the less chance law-abiding citizens will defend themselves and help prevent crime. This is simple economics, so I don't expect you to understand it.

Pardon, me? I haven't been trying to ban cheap guns. I merely think registration is a good idea.

Further, car ownership is very expensive, and yet I see many poor people driving. How much does a gun permit cost?

As for training programs, do you honestly think we should have a citizenry armed with guns that don't even know how to use them? Shit, that's the other excuse I've heard from conservatives as to why there are so many gun-related deaths...people, especially children, weren't properly trained in how to use and respect them.

Because the more guns controlled by law abiding citizens, the less crime. Remember this study?

http://www.press.uchicago.edu/Misc/Chicago/493636.html

It uses much more detailed criteria than the bogus study you posted.

Oh yeah, universities like John Hopkins are notorious for creating bogus studies, but a man out to sell a book isn't.

Just looking at the interview, I could easily begin to rip it apart with such quotes as Lotts saying, "Criminals are deterred by higher penalties." Now that's a friggin' laugh. Those higher penalities have sure deterred all them drug dealers, haven't they?

But you know what? It's not worth the time or effort for every time I have, and quite adeptly I might add, it gets me no where with you, so why bother? You're not interested in the discussion. You're stuck in your mindset, and you believe me to be some sort of cartoon-character of a leftist.

You might be interested to know that my son owns a relatively high power bee-bee gun. I've also let him go out with one of our gun-collector friends to a shooting range for target practice with a real gun.

Not all liberals are cut from the same cloth, Spall. I'm not interested in confiscating guns, or striping us of our rights. I'm definitely not PC. I wouldn't be caught dead driving a Suburban or an SUV. My son doesn't play soccer and is allowed to watch almost any movie he wants, listen to any music, or play any video game no matter how violent.

Curiously, my son, almost 14 now, espouses Libertarian doctrine. I chalk it up to adolescence. <VBG>
