Iran has made a big miscalculation with this toll BS. And now they say they have also mined the Strait, which forces everyone through the 'toll route' in Iranian waters.
Objectively, there is no way Trump can allow this to stand. The Iranians have moxie, I'll give them that, but if they don't back down, Trump will have no choice but to send Iran back to the Stone Age. That would mean destroying Iran's powerplants, energy infrastructure, the water desalination plants, etc. But with their remaining missiles / drones, Iran will immediately hit and cripple much of the energy infrastructure throughout the Gulf States, requiring months / years to repair.
So a very tough decision for Trump. Letting Iran completely dominate the Strait is a non-starter, but the alternative is also dire. It all boiled down to our inability to destroy all of Iran's missiles / drones hidden deep in within their mountainous terrain, plus the hypersonic missile factor. So this is a major paradigm shift for modern warfare.
