Trump is so insecure, he can't allow himself to hire people smarter than he is. He has an extremely vulnerable ego, so ends up with an echo chamber of weak advisors who are afraid to disagree with the boss. His main selection criteria has been - 1) they have to look like supermodels (to make him look good), and 2) they can't dare have a differing opinion.
In the corporate world these are the leaders that often fail -- CEOs who refuse to hire the most competent people since they fear they'll be replaced by them as CEO. In contrast, successful leaders like Reagan seek out the most competent people he can find. He doesn't see their high competence as a threat.
Trump also burns his bridges when he fires people, he insults them and makes life long enemies. He did that over and over in his first term. He also can't back away from a failed policy since his ego is so vulnerable. He doubles down and ends up in disaster / bankruptcy, like 4X Don.
